About Meatball
Meatball was incidentally hooked by a fisherman in the left shoulder. Unfortunately, as the fisherman was trying to safely reel Meatball closer, the line broke.

Rescue
The hook became embedded in the left shoulder and as Meatball tried to leave the situation, the line broke. Meatball was fortunately found later by people snorkeling nearby. These snorkelers were successful in grabbing Meatball and bringing them safely to shore.

Diagnose
During the intake exam, Meatball appeared healthy other than the embedded hook. However, radiographs revealed a second smaller hook that had been ingested. The external hook was removed and the wounds were treated.

Care
Meatball will stay in our care while we monitor the ingested fishing hook. The hook has already made it far into the intestines and so surgical removal is not an option. Meatball should be able to pass the hook with supportive care. The hook may also break down as it passes through the intestines. Meatball has a good prognosis.

Fun Fact
Studies have shown that Circle Hooks are generally safer to use than traditional J Hooks while fishing. Circle hooks have a curved design that makes it more likely to catch in the corner of the mouth rather than be swallowed deeply. J hooks are more likely to be swallowed and deeply embed in the esophagus or stomach. The type of hook doesn’t matter however if it becomes externally hooked onto a turtle or other bycatch.
